Atoms
With Consciousness, Matter With Curiosity
Probably I’m the last scientfically-oriented person in
the world to discover this, butRichard Feynman wrote
a poem that he read as part of an address to the National Academy of Sciences.
I stumbled across it because I was actually looking for scientists who were
familiar with work of the poet Muriel Rukeyser — anyone have any suggestions?
Anyway, here’s Feynman:

Nobody is surprised, of course, that Feynman was a card-carrying dysteleological
physicalist. More interesting is that he chose to
highlight this kind of question — the emergence of complexity and consciousness
from the blind play of atoms, stupidly minding their own business — rather than
something about particle physics, for example. As much as reductionists get a
bad name in some circles, the good ones do appreciate the bigger picture.

Who is Mattees van Dijk?
- Mattees van Dijk is a family doctor who’s interested in cosmology and has a passion for existential questions. He wrote his e-book to expose his ideas about the meaning of consciousness to the world.
Can you tell me something about the e-book that you wrote?
- In this e-book I bring scientific knowledge as the basis for the argument that consciousness is not only a product of brainactivity but also a cosmological phenomenon that in fact is the basis for all reality. Our cosmos has a built-in intelligence. The book deals with philosophical questions about how our human consciousness is connected with the consciousness of all , the holoconsciousness. It is inevitable that cosmology,quantumphysics,evolutional science, cognitive science should be discussed.
Our great Dutch compatriot Spinoza was the founder of modern pantheism. Pantheism is making a come back.Also existential and spiritual questions and the science of consciusness is in the picture again in science. My e-book is trying to fill the gap between science and spiritual life, but it keeps a sober look on this matter.
So what is the reason you wrote the e-book?
- The reason is my search for the meaning of life and the miracle being human just fascinates me so much that sharing my ideas with other readers could only become possible by writing this e-book.
How do you think the bookmarket will look like over five years?
- I predict a great future for the e-book and I think they will become more sophisticated and grow to some audiovisual presentation, with more interaction with the readers and maybe even in virtual reality. The difference between blog, website, e-book, presentation, film will gradually disappear. Still I’m convinced the paper book will for ever stay with us.
I think, though, that the paper book will be replaced by a foldable digital device.

- First of all you have to realize that marketing is very important and the art of writing is a talent which cannot be learned easily. The most important thing is passion. Feel deep involvement with your e-book. Look for a good publisher who believes in your e-book, thinks with you and has the same involvement. They are also hard to find! Just realize that you’re not finished with writing you’re book. The real work starts then! An e-book doesn’t sell itself unless you are a famous writer already or some other famous person.

Chaos, order and consciousness, a search through the universe for consciousness
My eBook is a journey through the cosmos in search of consciousness. Our universe
consists of energy, mass distributed in space and time and is governed by the
laws of nature. But our cosmos is much more than that, it is also a huge
information system and contains consciousness. We think consciously of what we
think, feel and decide with our brain, but is our consciousness really unique?
If we
see our universe as gigantic information system there must also an information
holder! This information holder must contain all the information that exists,
and in my book I call this the holo-consciousness. The interesting thing about
consciousness is that it is able to make choices, in contrast to natural laws,
which are described by mathematical formulas. Consciousness also appears
necessary to bring particles that do not really exist yet in space and time to reality,
the so-called quantum collapse. Thus consciousness is the foundation of the
cosmos - the universe only becomes reality with consciousness. This theme takes
us along an interesting journey through cosmology, relativity, particle
physics, quantum physics, chaos theory, information theory, brain science,
evolution, intelligent design, the origin and history of religion, the theory
of the self, free will, and much more. The main theme of this eBook is the
pantheism of Spinoza, our great compatriot. The scientific results of our time fully
vindicate him, 300 years after his death. The eBook is a gesture of the natural
sciences to the metaphysical without becoming too woolly.
